Big Dog and Catfish Willie
by Jeff Reid
Despite the comical name of this acoustic duo these guys are serious
about their music. No, they don’t take themselves seriously, .but
Bert Linton - bass/vocals and Tommy Webster - guitar/vocals are
serious musicians. They have had a good summer making a side project
- from their band the 360’s -work and in the process providing local
music fans with a tasty choice of songs.
“We started playing
as a result of a request from a bar owner here in town who was a fan
of Robert Earl Keen and Tommy knew a lot of his songs,” recalls
Linton. “So he suggested that Tommy come in on Thursday nights for a
couple of sets.” Tommy told Bert about the offer and according to
him, “Bert smoozed himself into the arrangement.” After a couple of
tequila shots, they had a name. It seems to be a constant battle as
to who is gonna be Catfish Willie (they both figure that he is the
“cool guy”) and it’s just not fair that Tommy is the cool guy - all
of the time. So, they usually have to settle this dispute with a
sometimes violent game of rock, paper, and scissors. Tommy usually
wins.
Kidding aside, this
duo enjoys playing together and “loves” the music they play - a
different mix that separates them from most local acts. From Keen
classics to Crowed House, Van Morrison, John Mayer, Todd Synder,
Elton John and Paul Thorn they have their finger of some of today’s
best contemporary songwriters, as well as seldom heard classics.
So if you get a
chance to see this duo, don’t hesitate. “We absolutely love it when
folks know the words to the songs and help us sing along,” confides
Webster. “That is the kind of stuff that makes it fun for us.” But
if you don’t sing that is okay too. He continues, “You can just sit
on your ‘patootie’ and have some drinks ... that’s fine with us,
just yell loudly after each song and it will all work out.”
