CFJS Announces Scholarships - Three UNCW Students Recognized

The Cape Fear Jazz Society, in association with UNCW, proudly presented the annual CFJS Scholarship Concert at Beckwith Recital Hall, Cultural Arts Building on Friday evening, April 25th at 7:30 pm.

This year CFJS member and worldwide popular jazz and blues entertainer, vocalist Melva Houston, sang with the UNCW Big Band under the direction of Dr. Frank Bongiorno.  Melva opened the show, performing with the UNCW Saxtet ensemble, featuring two of last year’s CFJS scholarship recipients, Taylor Lee on bass and Jon Tucker on alto sax.

The annual concert is the one event that provides funds for the jazz scholarships at UNCW; the rest of the money comes from donations throughout the year.   And thanks to a great turnout at the April concert, the Cape Fear Jazz Society scholarship fund has grown and as a result, announced in May that three $1,000 scholarships have been awarded to talented young jazz musicians attending UNCW.  Rising senior, saxophonist Jon Tucker will for the third year receive one, as will bassist Paul Tarangello, also a rising senior.  The third scholarship will go to incoming freshman trumpet player, Aaron Lane.

The Beat and the Cape Fear Jazz Society congratulate these young men and wish them well in their chosen field of jazz music and look forward to seeing and hearing from them in the years to come.
