Tift Merritt - From Water Street to Another Country...

 

It has been said many times that it takes more than talent to become successful in the music business.  While Tift Merritt certainly has talent— as a songwriter and performer— she also has a high level of independence and is clearly focused on the elements in her life that make her feel vital. Whether writing songs, short stories, poetry or the next great American novel, Merritt at 33, is beginning to be aware of a reoccurring theme in her life— the need to escape from the pressures and expectations of others, in order to return too herself and rejuvenate her creative spirit.

Wilmington Unplugged

“That’s what I’m talking about,” exclaims Kevin Rhodes as he comments on the evening of song, spirits and camaraderie that he and many others were experiencing at Water Street Restaurant in July. Hundreds of musicians and music lovers bellied up to the bar or enjoyed dinner and listened to original unplugged music by some of Wilmington’s best songwriters.

It has been a year since his first experiment with Wilmington Unplugged fizzled at Belle Festa, but now Rhodes is like a proud papa as he works the room with a permanent grin.  What are you doing Tuesday, August 5th @7pm? Come on down and see what Kevin and everybody else is talking about.

 

Airlie Pickett - This Girl Just Wants To Have Fun

 

For sixteen year old Airlie Pickett, playing violin and surfing has many similarities. As an award winning surfer and passionate violinist she explains that “The feeling is the same.  Your life is put in perspective while playing violin or while you are surfing.  Certain things don’t seem as relevant when you are in the water or playing an instrument. I lose myself in the moment doing both.” Admitting that surfing seems to be more individualistic, she points out that there are times when it can be like playing the violin in an ensemble. “A lot of times when you surf you are out there with surfers and have to be conscious of them and their movements in order to orchestrate or perform.” She explains. “So to me surfing and playing violin are really a lot a like.”
